Local Transport Brand: from zero online presence to a measurable local lead machine

Local transport brand case study

I built a complete local-digital stack (website + Google Business Profile + content + tracking + targeted ads) and turned an offline-only transport operator into a visible, mobile-first local brand.
Outcome (Jul–Dec 2024): 92,228 Business Profile views, 52,658 searches showing the profile, 4,155 Business Profile interactions, 2,042 phone calls via the Business Profile (≈340 calls/month), 10.6K Search Console clicks (≈1,767 clicks/month) from 425K impressions (≈70,833 impressions/month), average CTR ≈2.5%, average position 14.3. Mobile accounted for ~81% of profile views (74,704 mobile vs 16,601 desktop). Top discovery queries: ~18.1k and 5,917 appearances.

The baseline problem

Client: local transport services (trucks/vans/drivers).
Initial state: no website, no Google Business Profile, no structured content, no local visibility, and effectively zero inbound calls from search. They ran a solid operational service but had zero digital funnel.

Clear, measurable objective: create a low-cost, repeatable local SEO system that produces phone leads from Google and establishes a long-term organic funnel.

Strategy (what I decided to do and why)

I treated this like a local product-market-fit problem — make the business findable where customers are already looking (mobile search & Maps), then make contact (calls) frictionless.

Core pillars:

  • Foundational site build — fast, mobile-first WordPress site built to convert (service pages, clear local CTAs, schema, fast TTFB).
  • Google Business Profile (GBP) as the primary lead generator — created/verified profile, service list, categories, attributes, geo-tagged photos, and ongoing GBP posts.
  • Local keyword & intent mapping — mapping search intent to pages (service pages, FAQs, “near me” queries, voice-search phrasing).
  • Structured content for modern search — FAQ + short answers + structured data to improve answer-surface potential (AEO/GEO-friendly).
  • Tracking & measurement — GA4 + Google Tag Manager + Search Console + Business Profile monitoring + call-tracking integrated into analytics.
  • Paid ads for fast demand — targeted Google Ads to validate keywords and seed early leads while organic gains matured.
  • Operationalized review & citation management — review funnel, consistent NAP across directories, and local citations.

Tools used: WordPress, Schema (LocalBusiness/Service/FAQ), Google Business Profile, Google Search Console, GA4, Google Tag Manager, Google Keyword Planner, Semrush (for keyword volume and competitive signals), Google Ads, basic call-tracking.

Execution (concise timeline)

Month 0 – discovery & foundation

  • Audit, competitor mapping, and target keyword list (geo + service intent).
  • Registered domain, deployed WordPress with responsive template, CDN and basic performance tuning (image compression, caching, gzip/HTTP2).

Month 1 – GBP & tracking

  • Created and verified the Business Profile; completed categories, service list and added geo-tagged photos.
  • Implemented GA4 + GTM. Connected call events (GBP call notifications + in-site click-to-call) to analytics.

Month 2 – On-page & local copy

  • Published geo-targeted service pages and a short FAQ content cluster for voice/AEO queries.
  • Added LocalBusiness and Service schema to service pages and FAQ structured markup.

Month 3 – Citations, reviews, and ads

  • Built consistent citations across priority local directories.
  • Launched low-budget Google Ads campaigns to validate conversion paths and drive immediate calls.

Months 4–6 – Iterate & scale

  • Optimized pages based on Search Console queries; added content for keywords showing impressions but low CTR.
  • Review-generation campaign (SMS/email prompts) to increase GBP reviews and engagement.
  • Continued ad optimization and added more targeted service pages where demand surfaced.

4 — Metrics & results (Jul–Dec 2024)

All numbers are actual performance during the Jul–Dec 2024 window.

Visibility & discovery (GBP)

  • People viewed your Business Profile: 92,228 (≈15,371 views/month).
  • Searches that showed the Business Profile: 52,658.
  • Platform breakdown: Mobile 74,704 (≈81%); Desktop 16,601 (≈18%).
  • Top search terms showing the profile: ~18.1k and 5,917 impressions.

Engagement & conversions (GBP + calls)

  • Business Profile interactions: 4,155 total (≈693 interactions/month).
  • Phone calls via GBP: 2,042 (Jul–Dec) → ≈340 calls/month.
That’s a direct, trackable inbound lead channel with measurable volume.

Organic search (Google Search Console)

  • Total clicks: 10.6K (≈1,767 clicks/month).
  • Total impressions: 425K (≈70,833 impressions/month).
  • Average CTR: ~2.5% (clicks ÷ impressions).
  • Average position: 14.3.

Interpretation: GBP produced a high volume of discovery and direct calls; the website drove steady clicks and impressions, with clear room to push average position upward via targeted content and links.

Key wins (what mattered)

  • Call volume: 2,042 tracked GBP calls in 6 months — meaningful commercial impact for a local operator (≈340 calls/month).
  • Mobile-first wins: 81% of profile views were mobile — validating the mobile-first approach and justifying a click-to-call UX focus.
  • SEO funnel established: 425K impressions and 10.6K clicks show the site is being seen on key phrases; CTR and position indicate strong opportunity to convert more impressions into clicks and higher-ranking slots.
  • Sustainable asset: Built web and local assets that continue to generate impressions and calls without always relying on ad spend.

Why this worked

  • Match intent → format: Service pages + short answers + schema matched how local customers search (voice & map queries).
  • GBP as the conversion anchor: Optimizing the Business Profile delivered direct phone leads faster than organic rankings alone.
  • Mobile-first UX: With >80% mobile exposure, reducing friction (click-to-call, fast pages) pushed conversions.
  • Measurement-first approach: Call events and GSC data enabled rapid, evidence-based adjustments.

What I’d do next (prioritized roadmap)

  1. Move average position from 14.3 into top 3 for priority keywords.
Actions: targeted content clusters for the 10–20 keywords producing impressions but low rank; local link-building (partner pages, local press); internal link recalibration.
  2. Improve CTR on high-impression pages.
Actions: rewrite meta titles/descriptions for intent, add FAQ snippets and schema to win rich results.
  3. Scale review acquisition and manage reputation.
More 5-minute review touchpoints to increase GBP signals and CTR from Maps.
  4. Conversion-rate lift on the site.
Improve above-the-fold CTAs, add live-chat or scheduling widget, and test headline variants.
  5. Expand service-area pages.
If certain towns show high impressions (GSC), create micro-pages optimized to rank locally.

Measurement & KPIs I tracked

  • GBP: profile views, searches, interactions, calls (monthly).
  • GSC: clicks, impressions, CTR, average position (query & page-level).
  • GA4: sessions, goal conversions, call events, landing-page performance.
  • Ads: cost-per-click, cost-per-call (if running), conversion rate.

Technical checklist used (quick)

  • Mobile-first responsive WordPress build
  • CDN + caching + image optimization
  • SSL + fast hosting configuration
  • LocalBusiness + Service + FAQ schema markup
  • GA4 + GTM event setup for calls & form submits
  • GBP verification, geotagged photos, services & attributes
  • Consistent NAP across citations
  • On-page local signals (h1, address markup, service-area pages)

Final take

This was classic local SEO + productize-the-offline approach: structure the digital presence to match local buyer behavior, measure everything, and iterate fast. The result was a reliable inbound phone channel (2,042 GBP calls in six months) and measurable organic traction (10.6K clicks, 425K impressions). If you want the same for another local business, the repeatable playbook is the same — site + GBP + content + tracking + review & citation discipline.
